There's a group of my friends who get together every Friday for games and potlucking. It's a ton of fun. Last weekend we all got together for the first (annual?) camping trip. Jeff and I took off on Friday before the rest of the group left on Saturday. Jeff and I stayed at Graves Creek Campground near Lake Quinault in the Olympic National Park. If you can get over the 20 plus mosquito bites you'll wake up with, you've got one of Washington's quietest and most beautiful campsite. We slept next to a rushing river and enjoyed a mile long loop hike that takes you through the rainforest and along the river. The camp host said some people had reported a young bear near the furthest part of the trail but we didn't get to see any animals except for squirrels and birds. Candice, one of the game nighters, asked if it was a requirement for camp hosts to be hilarious old men, when you visit, you'll want to check out his always accurate weather station and you'll see what I mean.
The huge trunk on the Civic was full of camping stuff. It's surprising how little space you can have even if you buy small camping gear sets. The road that we drove on to get to Graves Creek was about 16 miles of unpaved road. The car held up great but got really dirty. Jeff thinks he's funny and wrote "wash me" on the bumper of the car. Apparently I think I'm funny too because I added "Jeff" as a clever retort.
We ate breakfast in Forks but didn't see any vampires or werewolves just a bunch of merchandise. Later we met up with the game nighters and found a camp site at the Falls Creek Campground on Lake Quinault. We scored two great sites right near the water. The next morning Candice and I went canoeing, perhaps the highlight of the trip for me.
On Sunday we were off to Kalaloch, I regret to let people in on this amazing campsite gem because it's already always full. You can sleep on a bluff over looking a sandy Pacific Ocean beach and they make online reservations. We chose a cold and rainy weekend to go to Kalaloch but it was great anyway. Long walks on the beach and dinners cooked over an open fire make the heart a little softer. I want to go back to Olympic Peninsula as much as possible for the remainder of this summer.
That looks like great fun! The photos are fantastic! Also, Jeff is pretty funny.
