Day One of a Brief Northwest Road Trip

September 11, 2010
Today we drove from Seattle to Jesse M. Honeyman State Park near Florence, OR. We drove through Eugene just to see what it was all about. Eugene is cute, sunny enough to grow tomatoes, and only a little more than an hour away from the ocean. I might be able to live in Eugene. We then took 126 west towards the coast to meet up with 101.
We stayed at Honeyman State Park Campgrounds near the coast of Oregon. The campground could have been better, small spots, noisy neighbors, etc. There's no soap or warm water in the restroom which is annoying and kind of gross. We bought wood from the campground hosts (something you're supposed to do because transporting wood is environmentally icky), but the wood was too moist to start a fire with. One of our neighbors brought over some dry wood and we were able to finally get a fire going.
We opened the tent only to find that it has grown a colony of pink mildew. This probably has something to do with an enormous pile of dog poop that was found a little too late on our last camping trip to Kalaloch (remember folks, clean up after your pets). It was probably time to get a new tent anyway as the floor was getting ready to split but this wasn't an encouraging find so early on in our camping dependent road trip. Perhaps the best part of this leg of the trip was the stars. Framed by a tree line of conifer, the sky was lit up with little interruption from the moon or other bright lights. I laid my digital camera on the roof of the car, shutter facing up, set at 60 seconds (the slowest speed) and could not yield more than a few specks of white on a black background.
